Chris Brown: A Tune No One Can Afford to Play

According to the site "E"On-Line, in what they hype as "exclusive," they claim Rihanna and Chris Brown may come together again to sign a duet during an "American Idol broadcast on the same stage? There is also a quote from Rihanna's manager saying it's not true. But is it true?

Are the powers that sell records and book concerts testing the waters to get a pulse on the public's reaction?

Remember, Chris Brown brutally beat Rihanna on February 15, 2009, just over three years ago. The picture we all saw around the globe was horrifying. Rihanna did not surface much or give interviews with the exception of the hour long interview with Diane Sawyer on ABC's Prime Time to discuss what happened. The beating was the first felony charge for Brown, he was sentenced to community service and probation until 2014.Since the beating, he's been in various altercations of sorts with his temper, but has so far remained free from a jail cell.

Although Chris Brown was not sentenced to jail time, he has been sentenced by the public court of opinion for his criminal behavior. Just recently Brown performed at the Grammy's but not without public outcry.

There are a lot of fans asking to give Chris Brown another chance. That Brown was only 19 years of age when he beat his then girlfriend Rihanna. For someone like Chris Brown, it's not likely he will change anytime soon. Once angry and violent, it always escalates into angrier and more dangerous. This is a pot on a stove ready to boil over at any given time.

Teen Dating Expert and Columnist Susie Kroll said on her site earlier today,

"about the rumors surrounding Chris Brown and Rihanna getting back together and the dangerous ramifications to our teens. We know that abused women and girls often return to the abuser several times, sometimes putting themselves in lethal danger. To do this while the public is watching sends extremely bad messages, and, yes, it comes with the territory of celebrity, just like the big black Bentley Brown drives. Chris Brown and Rihanna are role models to millions of teens and tweens all over the world, they could have made several responsible decisions after the incident, but neither seems to have done that."

There is a responsibility with being in the spotlight especially when the audience is made up of mostly teenagers. There is also a responsibility from the media to not fuel this garbage in an attempt to get traffic or ratings to your sites. Domestic Violence is a serious crime, not to be used on national stage, treated and promoted like a reuniting of a once popular circus act.

There is nothing entertaining about attempted murder!

The Cookie Cutter Response to Intimate Partner Murder!

We hear about one murder after another involving a woman ending a violent relationship where their final destination is a cold cemetery plot.

Interesting how the Cleveland community in Ohio, similar to every other neighborhood in America, responded exactly the same. The media reporting on the crime of intimate partner homicide as if it were cut and pasted from a standard cue card. Like our own individual DNA, no two cases of "IPV" are alike.

Intimate Partner violence leading to homicide in this country is not a cookie cutter crime! But, this is exactly how society responds. Case in point, on Sunday, Latasha Jackson, 19 and her 13 month old daughter Chaniya Wynn, were found each with a bullet on the floor in a dark, damp and dirty garage. The coward who killed mother and toddler, Thomas Lorde. Lorde had an extensive criminal record along with outstanding warrants in New York. He was found dead of a self-inflicted gun shot wound.

Latasha Jackson, as thousands of victims before her that we hear about after the bloodshed, ended the violent relationship with Lordes who was also the father of Chaniya. Latasha wanted to believe if she left with her child she'd be safe. This mindset is never enough when your involved with an angry, dangerous, individual with whom you end a relationship. Victim's must be trained and prepared as if its war. Latasha went into the battlefield, ill equipped and this cost the live's of she and her child.

The Cleveland community can jump up and down, cry say this isn't fair, but what are you going to do other than briefly grieve the loss of two innocent lives? Wait for the next murder to happen? How about taking action so this doesn't happen again?

It's time now to sit down with the faith based leaders, elected officials, law enforcement, schools and health care facilities in your neighborhood and create a plan of action revolving around the prevention of innocent lives resulting from bloodshed of intimate partner homicide.

There is a vigil this evening with members of the community to say a prayer and remember the lives lost who while live, were invisible. Because victims of intimate partner violence are invisible! The violence Latasha lived and breathed was no different than a toxic and deadly gas. How many others are right there in your community living on the edge? Who will be next? Good, God loving families whom, if I were them, would be thinking, there, but the grace of God, go someone else I know.

I have a news bulletin for not only Cleveland, but the world, this doesn't have to happen to anyone else if you'd just step out and take action!

Finding safety from pathological abusers is obviously not as easy as it seems. Safety plans encompassing restraining orders, just leaving, living in transitional shelter care, or staying with others is not fool-proof regarding protection.

Some victims have confessed to others the danger in their relationships as a form of documentation because they sensed they would be killed. However, family and friends often don’t know what to do with the confession other than telling them to go to the police or to a shelter. Police tell them if they don’t have evidence he has done something, they need to wait until he does something that can be proved. With dangerous and pathological perpetrators, what they CAN do is usually permanent.

Other victims share little of what they were experiencing. While family, friends, pastors, therapists, and others might have known there was danger from watching the dynamics, in the end, by the time that evidence was criminally needed, the victim was dead.

Playboy Playmate Continues Cycle of Intimate Partner Violence with Marston Hefner

Marston Hefner, 21, beat up his girlfriend, Claire Sinclair, 20, last week in California and she wants Hefner to make a public apology in exchange, she will drop the charges? Hefner was charged and released on $20,000 bond.

The only reason this crime gained any attention is because the offender, Marston Hefner, happens to be the son of playboy mogul, Hugh Hefner, and Claire Sinclair is Playboy's 2011, Playmate of the Year. Amazing that at 20 she is underage and cannot legally drink, yet, she's old enough to be a Playboy Playmate.

Claire Sinclair wants to drop the charges. That's right, she will not be cooperating with the District Attorney prosecuting the criminal case against Hefner.

According to Huffington Post Joutnalist David Lohr, in an exclusive interview:

"She cannot just drop the charges. The state does the prosecution," Lt. Phlunte Riddle of the Pasadena Police Department told The Huffington Post. Earlier today, 20-year-old Sinclair told TMZ.com that, while she does not condone domestic violence, she would drop the charges if Hefner apologized. "That is why I will not press charges against Marston Hefner if he keeps his word to give a public apology for physically abusing me on several occasions, and seeks psychiatric help for his anger issues," Sinclair said, according to the celebrity gossip website.

Notice Claire Sinclair is asking for a public apology but also claiming Hefner has physically abused her on "several occasions." It's likely the other criminal acts of violence towards Claire were privately forgiven. A common theme shared among intimate partner victims across the country. Marston Hefner, no different than all serial offenders says, "Baby I'm so sorry, it will never happen again, please baby can you forgive me?" Sinclair, as most young women her age, responds within 10 seconds and all is forgiven--until the next time and the time after that and so on. Her mindset during the last physical beating was only to scare him, as if to say "I will call the police this time and press charges."

At the tender age of 20, Sinclair is a veteran victim of intimate partner violence, continuing the cycle of violence by remaining and not seeking professional counseling services for this very toxic relationship. And at the very least, Claire Sinclair must create for herself the Evidentiary Abuse Affidavit and video just in case her head hits the ground, accidentally of course.

As with all serial offenders, I call this their "pattern of conduct" because he has gotten away with violence in the past, Hefner doesn't believe her. Why the hell should he? All the others times they kissed and made up.

Sinclair's response to repeated criminal acts against her by Hefner sent smoke signals saying, his behavior was acceptable the first time she was hit.

If I were going to the craps table in Vegas, I'd wager, if they remain in the relationship, he will repeat his behavior. The next time she is beaten, the outcome could be very different.

The last time I checked body bags were not a fashion statement!

Ignorance is the Leading Cause of Murder in Intimate Partner Violence

I receive quite a few private emails blasting me for writing the truth after a victim is found dead or murdered and the boyfriend or husband ends their lives in suicide. People that write or leave comments appearing on the blog, often defending the actions of a killer, is out of pure ignorance of the nature of the crime. Making excuses such as mental illness, they served in the military, grew up in an abusive household, post traumatic stress syndrome, to a drug and alcoholic problems, the list of excuses is endless.

The mindset of the general public seemingly looks everywhere around a tragedy, except the obvious. If a man or a woman murders someone with whom they had or have a relationship, it is calculated and premeditated from a state of escalation. But, to those who profess to know the killers of intimate partner homicide, the reactions to the crime are not realistic from my viewpoint. Having a bad day, saying the individual was driven to do it, or there is so much chaos in that persons' life is often a justification for the criminal act by those who knew them. When you make these types of remarks you are defending a cold blooded murderer, whether it be your friend or family member. I do not intend to demean your grief or loss, only to put the crime, and the criminal, in the proper perspective.

Calling out someone, such as myself, tearing them down personally for trying to keep victims and their families alive, is a crime in and of itself. The pattern of conduct by my police officer father, likely from the moment I came into the world, is no different than those I write about each day. My father's pattern of conduct was the predictor to her murder and his suicide. Unless you live behind the walls of daily terror and the unknown, you haven't a clue what it's like to know if you will wake up the following morning. Intimate partner homicide took away the lives of not only my parents, but my brother, kid sister and me.

Writing about those victims who did not reach out to someone such as myself in time, who did not know to read the information prescribed in the book Time's Up, or were unable to prepare the Evidentiary Abuse Affidavit, is my way to shout to the world that the victims mattered, even in their untimely deaths. My hope is the world will stop closing it's eyes when innocent children like Charlie and Braden Powell die, whose mother Susan Cox is still missing, and be forced to watch that no more children are blown up out of rage from this world into the next.

I have lost everything to the epidemic of intimate partner violence. Personally, I have nothing left to lose by calling out the bloody truth.

When you aren't part of the solution, you are part of the problem. So, instead of chastising my writing, make it part of your life to prevent the next incident of homicide in your own backyard.

New York Courts Stealing Trust Funds from Special Need and Disabled Community

There are many unjust cases in the world, but not many can surpass the disgust, corruption and outrageous abuse of the system quite like this one.

Former New York State Senator and Attorney Joseph R. Pisani, lauded as a child and disability advocate, has stolen upwards of $2,000,000 from a disabled Westchester, NY girl. The courts in New York have long trampled on the elderly and disabled for many years. One county in particular, Westchester, has allowed a special needs trust for disabled child, Andie Masotti, who suffers from high functioning autism, (according to the country's leading expert Dr. Federici), to illegally be drained without any regard to what her father legally set forth in a trust for her prior to his death in 2006.

Ann Masotti, mother and legal guardian of her daughter Andie, joined us live today in our studio's to shine a huge beacon on the disturbing and, by all accounts, illegal actions that have transpired in this case. Oh, by the way, Mr. Pisani is a convicted felon and has a very long history of questionable and unethical activity, yet the courts continually allow him to present himself as a representative for young Andie without any accountability.

A Brief History of the former Senator:

MARCH 1981: After a vigorous campaign by parents of mentally challenged and developmentally disabled children, Pisani co-sponsors proposed State legislation to pass a $1.9 million appropriation to absorb the back mortgage on the Mental Retardation Institute’s building in Valhalla, New York, giving the facility “a fresh start”. (New York Times, March 15, 1981)

1982:

· Pisani is indicted for diverting more than $80,000 by arranging a no-show job on his law firm’s payroll, disguising personal expenses as campaign expenses and stealing from escrow accounts of his law clients.

· Some of the charges include activities performed during his service as Chairman of the Temporary State Commission on Child Welfare (see above).

· Records of the indictment on file with the Westchester County Surrogate’s Court in White Plains, N.Y. for the probate of Vito Masotti’s estate indicate that on or about August 8, 1979, the defendant directed thousands of dollars in funds credited to Erma Jean Gina in a client escrow account be withdrawn, charged to Erma Jean Gina and paid to a friend of Pisani in connection with the repayment of certain investments by that friend, at a guaranteed interest rate of 10 per cent.

· The trial transcripts note that Pisani forged Ms. Gina’s signature more than once and that “this was not some sort of legitimate transaction.”

· During trial, Federal District Court Prosecutor Charles G. LaBella cites testimony and documents to support the charges that Pisani had embezzled money, evaded taxes on it and tried to obstruct the investigation. Referring to the embezzlement, LaBella says that “for years (the Senator) had been robbing Ms. Gina blind.” He also displays checks to show that Pisani used campaign funds to buy gifts for his extra-marital girlfriend (who is registered in the Child Commission Report as recording secretary), take vacation trips and invest in professional boxing while listing the expenditures as campaign costs on his financial statements. Senator Pisani, the prosecutor says, “was trying to hide what he was doing from the public.” (The New York Times, May 24, 1984)

MAY TO JUNE 1983:

· The jury convicts on 18 counts, acquits on 11 and fails to agree on others. (Judge David N. Edelstein presided; Federal District Court in Manhattan)

· Pisani is sentenced to four years in prison in Federal District Court in Manhattan. The lawyer and Senator, who faces disbarment, remains free pending appeal.

· He resigns his Senate post and stops practicing law.

· He immediately appeals the verdict.

OCTOBER 1984:

· A Westchester County child abuse agency, The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, charges that former State Senator Pisani set up a fake child abuse agency in Yonkers. The agency alleges that the Yonkers Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children has not investigated any cases, has no employees and illegally issued laypeople licenses and guns.

· The tenets of the century-old law allowing the formation of such an agency also permits those who are principals of said agency to be legally named any child’s guardian.

· In court papers, the County Agency reports the Yonkers group has registered 34 people as ‘peace officers’ with the State, allowing them to carry guns and identify themselves as detectives yet has investigated no cases and has no employees.

· In 1989 N.Y. NPC. LAW § 1403: NY Code - Section 1403: Corporations for the Prevention of Cruelty, forced the Yonkers group to disband after it was found that 17 out of 24 chapters, including the Yonkers agency, were found to be fronts for certain groups who had utilized a legal loophole that allowed them to carry guns and wear badges. In truth, those societies were abusing the 100 year old law that gave peace officer status to SPCC members so they could protect the rights of children. The societies became obsolete when governments developed social service agencies to look out for children, but the law allowing the formation of SPCCs remained on the books.

o In part, the 1989 law reads: (1-a) No corporation for the prevention of cruelty to children, or for
the dual purpose of prevention of cruelty to children and cruelty to
animals shall be incorporated on or after November first, nineteen
hundred eighty-nine. Any such corporations, incorporated prior to
November first, nineteen hundred eighty-nine, may exercise their powers
and conduct their operation in any adjacent county in which no such
corporations exist until the establishment of such corporations therein
prior to November first, nineteen hundred eighty-nine.

SEPTEMBER 12, 1985: A court decision reverses most of Pisani’s 1984 conviction, except the embezzlement and tax evasion charges. His final sentence, after appeal, is a year and a day in federal prison.

OCTOBER 1985: Pisani is disbarred.

1986:

· Pisani, despite his standing convictions, is allowed to represent clients in 794 cases to reduce property taxes for business owners and corporations in the very municipalities where he used to represent its citizens. (NOTE: The cases are listed on the NYS Unified Court System website records as being handled by Joseph R. Pisani, Esq. but nowhere in these case records are a reference to employment limitations placed upon Pisani due to his conviction and disbarment.)

· According to the New York State Certificate of Relief from Disabilities (NY SID #0817057K), Pisani does not receive a full release from the State, “removing all legal bars and disabilities to employment, license and privilege until January 1, 2008.”

· Yet from the date of his release from prison in 1986 to the present, Pisani continually practices law, including writing and executing a new will for a successful but very ill New Rochelle hairdresser, businessman and property owner (Vito Masotti), naming himself as Co-Executor and Trustee.

MARCH 1987: Pisani is returned to jail “for a year and a day” from a Manhattan halfway house for “violations of the center’s rules and regulations.” Friends said he was found with more than an allowable amount of prescription drugs in his system. (New York Times; March 20, 1987)

Today, in the studio Ann Masotti discussed how a legal system depleted a special needs child's funds set-up in an irrevocable trust by her father, prior to his death.

Former New York State Senator and Attorney Joseph R. Pisani Lauded as Child and Disability Advocate Continues to Steal $2,000,000 from Disabled Westchester New York Girl.

The Courts in New York have long trampled on the elderly and disabled for many years.

One county in particular, Westchester, has allowed a special needs trust for disabled child, Andie Masotti,

who suffers high functioning autism, to illegally be drained without any regard to what her father legally set forth in a trust for her prior to his death in 2006.

Joseph Pisani was heralded for his early child advocacy work as head of the New York State Commission on Child Welfare created by former Governor Hugh Carey. In that role, Pisani wrote, contributed and helped pass legislation that provided protections for children and the disabled.

Crisis in Family Court: A Mother's Mission and Lifting the Silence

Back in September of 2009, just 5 months after Amy Leichtenberg's 2 boys Jack 7 years old and Duncan 9 years old were savagely murdered by their father during a court forced visitation, Amy gave an hour long interview. During the show Amy discussed the steps taken to protect her children. Although her boys are gone, Amy's voice is not, she is shouting to stop the bloodshed of innocent lives.

The last time Amy saw her two boys alive, something was not right. Her estranged husband was acting out-of-sorts when they met at the police station. Amy refused to hand over her boys on March 7, 2009 an officer threatened her if she didn't give them to their father, she would be arrested according to her lawyer.

In 2007, Amy was awarded full custody of the boys with Connolly given supervised visitation. According to court reports from the family visitation center, Connolly's behavior was dangerous enough to temporarily cease all visits with the boys. In my experience, when a family visitation center terminates interaction between parent and child, it sends a red flag of danger. Connolly, the ever witty and clever abuser, was able to resume visits when his psychiatrist sent a "sympathy letter" to the judge "if my client is able to spend more time with his sons, Mr. Connolly's depression and outbursts would lessen."

The judge responded by setting a series of "behavioral guidelines." This included obtaining employment, housing and continued therapy.

In family court the two parties are presumed to be on a level playing field--law abiding individuals who have a disagreement over a private family matter. A core assumption of family law is that family disputes are not criminal disputes. As such, there are few safeguards built into the family court system to protect against the criminal dynamics that dominate family disputes in cases of family violence. In addition, the accusations the victim makes in family court, no matter how serious, carry no more authority than one person's say so. One of the most serious consequences is that when a family violence victim opens a case in family court against her abuser, the abuser is given equal opportunity to fight back against the victim's accusations, often because the abusers past is not an issue. Unless, of course, he is brought in from county or state prison sporting an orange jump suit and leg shackles.

There are lawyers and men’s groups who argue using domestic violence with a broad brush is not a reason to deny fathersvisitation with their children. Accusing mothers of lying or making up stories to keep fathers’ from their children.

Under the current laws, a parent without custody is entitled "reasonable visitation." There is a high burden of proof as evidenced in this case when a court refuses to take into account dangerous abusers pose to their children.

Until we place the issue of labeling these cases as a "private matter" or an isolated incident, expect the death toll among children to rise. And rise it has, with the recent murders of Charles 7 years of age and Braden 5 years of age on Sunday in the State of Washington. Their father Josh Powell was the only person of interest since the boys mother Susan Cox vanished from the marital Utah residence on December 6, 2009. Last week a judge ordered permanent placement of Susan's children too her parents Chuck and Judy Cox. However, as if this were a contestant game show Josh was given supervised visitation. Josh Powell took an ax to each of his own children, doused gallons of gasoline in the home before lighting a match and blowing up the home.

Cowardly War Hero and The Murder of Tiffany Pemberton

A picture is not worth one thousand words. To those who knew both Tiffany and Jason Pemberton, saying were "just a happy couple." Truth is what happens behind closed doors in a relationship cannot be detected by anyone believing they know a person.

Heroic metals received during war isn't a barometer for whether a person is good or evil either. In the war of intimate partner violence leading to homicide the hero's are those victims who tough it out and stay in their relationships hoping it will get better. The casualties of this war erases the lives of at a minimum 8-10 victims everyday.

Over the summer police responded to a call placed by Jason claiming, Tiffany was causing a disturbance, he didn't press charges. Pemberton calling Daytona police amounts to nothing more than intimidation. He obviously used his "war hero status" as a way to say to the world look at me, I can do no wrong.
In 2009, after three tours of active duty in the army Jason Pemberton received a medical discharge.

Serving our country and returning a hero had nothing to do with the murder of Tiffany Pemberton, 25, yet it was important enough too make the headlines in Florida. This cowards last actions in a war where victims are silenced for wanting to end the relationship with a cowardly killer only sanctions the behavior of a cold blooded murderer. He murders Tiffany and even in death grabs the headline all because he fought for our country. Showing once again, intimate partner violence and homicide is reviewed and reported on as if it were a momentary nose bleed! It is not. Intimate partner violence is criminal and with rapid fire turning deadly.

I didn't know either Tiffany nor Jason. I do however intimately know this war better than anyone. The headline should have read; Tiffany Pemberton a Beautiful Woman Lost her Life in the War on Intimate Partner Homicide. Included should have been information about what a victim can do to disarm the abuse leaving the violent relationship with her life.

The headline in the murder-suicide of this tragedy " Iraq Sniper War Hero, Shoots Wife, Self to Death."

Jason Pemberton may have earned three Purple Hearts, a Bronze star among others, but after he murdered his own wife those metals are as worthless as a prize in a box of cracker jacks.

Family Court Crisis: Rewarding a Killer Visitation for Charlie and Braden Powell ends in Murder

On Sunday, Charlie 7 and Braden 5, the children of missing Utah mother Susan Cox ,were murdered. The children were blown up in an explosion during a court ordered visitation with a dangerous psychopath.

Susan vanished on December 6, 2009 from her Utah home. If you recall Josh Powell had suddenly, taken the children then ages 2 and 4; camping in freezing temperature at midnight. When interviewed Susan was reported missing, the case covered by the media just prior to securing an attorney, Josh said he didn't know where his wife was and she just left. In the days following, Josh would say she left with another man. He would be the only person named by police in the case.

As in each one of these intimate partner missing homicide cases, the last person to see their wife or girlfriend, is almost always the person responsible for making them vanish. The pattern of conduct in this case prior to Susan vanishing, then afterwards, is significant, and often overlooked by law enforcement. Josh Powell was allowed to leave the state of Utah moving into his father's home with the two young boys.

Many experts of across the country, Reporter Isabelle Zehnder, Statement Analysis Expert Peter Hyatt, Attorney Anne Bremner, Legal commentator and defense Attorney Holly Hughes, among others, discussed the imminent danger to the boys lives. At one time or another we predicted if the legal system didn't remove the children, they would be murdered. Last week permanent placement of the boys was given to Susan's parents Chuck and Judy Cox. Josh Powell by a judge was given supervised visitation like a prize for being the biological father. What was this judge thinking? Powell posed a threat to his own children's lives.

The murders of Charlie and Braden's were by all accounts preventable.

The family of Susan Cox requires not only prayers, but the promise that on the blood of their grandchildren, the epidemic and ignorance in the family courts across the country will do more than award murder's visitation and custody of children, especially when their mothers are missing intimate partner homicide victims!

Let's also remember Susan Cox is still missing and she requires our attention to be found.

Taking the Mystery Out of Robin Baxter's Murder

There really was no mystery when Robin Lynn Baxter's body was pulled from the Ohio River in June of 1990, three days after she was reported missing on the 19th as to why she was murdered. The autopsy would show Robin died from blunt trauma to the head.

The couple according to neighbors, friends and family told investigators the couple's relationship was volatile.

Chris Baxter was at times, violent and controlling. The couple were last seen together arguing. Chris Baxter left a friends home the couple was visiting first, Robin followed behind.

When questioned by law enforcement the husband, Chris Baxter said he got up at 3 or 4am walked in the neighborhood to look for his wife and besides breaking glass to the back door of their home, that's all he recalled. By the way it's important to point out, Baxter claimed he'd blacked out during his second interview with investigators a few days later.

Through the years, Chris Baxter's drinking increased and so did his boasting of her murder, but law enforcement who said Baxter was the sole person interest, never had enough to charge him. Until yesterday when New Albany, IN police arrested him for her murder 22 years ago.

This case is an intimate partner homicide. The pattern of conduct in 1990, of Chris Baxter that lead up to Robin's murder should have been investigated further. A search warrant should have been obtained for the residence and Baxter's vehicles. But, at the time law enforcement did little else than question him. The blunt weapon possibly used to kill her, a lead pipe.

This tragedy is a prime example of thousands of similar cases across the country gone cold or still missing yet to be re-opened and properly investigated.

In 1979, DNA technology was not available.

Across the country many boxes of important DNA evidence Continue to sit in crime storage facilities as budgets are cut and law enforcement agencies are without the resources or manpower to work a cold case, especially if it was 33 years old.

In Beaver County, PA, investigators worked the 1979, unsolved homicide of Catherine Janet Walsh, 23 years old found by her father, her hands bound, cause of death, strangulation.

On Sunday, police arrested and charged Bridgewater Councilman Gregory Scott Hopkins, 65 with her murder. Investigators on the case resubmitted evidence to a crime lab using new technology. The Councilman's DNA was on the rope used to bound Catherine's hands, bed sheets and nightgown.

The symphony has already begun playing the "he's a citizen of good standing" musical arrangement. Words to music written by a "once" respectable businessman.

This case shows how easy it can be to get away with murder. There are a lot of unsolved cold and missing persons cases across the country where law enforcement could solve cases of intimate partner homicide but don't for one reason or another. Can you imagine how many so called "wonderful people" are living in your community?

The population of "wonderful, amazing people" are not immune from committing the perfect crime. Those who murder a lover, girlfriend or spouse are quite often pillars in their community and do hold positions of importance or power.

What does a person who commits intimate partner homicide look like? Looks like the town of Bridgewater has a vacant council seat to fill!

Silenced! Stacie DeSantis-Dorego

Last week in Rhode Island, Stacie DeSantis-Dorego, 39 years of age, lost her life to intimate partner homicide. The details of her murder are too gruesome, even for me to describe. There was a court order of protection and the former boyfriend has been arrested, charged in her murder.

On January 22, 2012, Johnston Firefighters from IAFF Local 1950 responded to a fire call for help that came too late for Stacie, but not for her surviving children ages 3 & 5. The firefighters are collecting donations for the care of the children and the information is below on how you can help.

The horrific events that occurred on Sunday, January 22, 2012 in Johnston have left two children, ages 3 and 5 without a mother. These events also left our community reeling in disbelief. Johnston Firefighters, wanting to help the family, contacted Cara Mallozzi, a neighbor of the victim who initially reached out to help the children as well as the relatives who are presently caring for them. Cara initially requested clothes for the children; however, she has received an overwhelming response from the community. Smith's attorney convinced the court that he was a candidate for a new procedure called "chemical castration" with the stipulation that he take the drug Depo-Provera and attend weekly counseling sessions for the next ten years. His lawyer argued if his client received regular injections that it would reduce his testosterone level and he would no longer have a desire to rape women and children.

Following his 30 days' in-patient treatment at John Hopkins Hospital, Smith was free to move to Richmond, Virginia to start his new life.

Three years into his castration injections, he met, and fell in love with his treatment nurse, Barbara. The couple married and began a family.

Somehow, with six years left of his court-ordered treatment, Smith was dismissed from the program and instructed to report to the Texas courts by mail until the end of his parole. Frank and Barbara appeared to be your average couple. Smith was an over-the-road truck driver and Barbara a registered nurse.

When Polly Franks and her family moved next-door to the couple she was thrilled. The families spent time together at each other homes. Their children became best friends.

In the early 1990s police received reports from 83 pre-teen-aged girls who had either been raped or molested by a man who would break into home while the children were sleeping. Police were left scratching their heads. This person was not in their database and matched no one currently in their system.

In 1995, while Polly's girls, ages 8 and 9, were at a sleep-over, Barbara Smith caught her husband, naked and masturbating in front of their eight-year-old daughter and the neighbors' kids. Police were contacted. They ran Smith's DNA through a state-wide database. It came back positive for the rape of a five-year girl. Smith was arrested.

When Frank Joseph Smith only received a suspended sentence, Polly Franks was furious. She decided to keep an eye on him, following him each time he moved into a new neighborhood. Undeterred by a childhood disease that had left her dependent on a wheelchair and crutches for mobility, Polly Franks moved with the ease and art of a veteran twenty-year law enforcement officer.

In 1997, Polly Franks got her private investigator license with the sole purpose of bringing Smith to justice. And it was also a way to legally follow Smith. She was determined to learn within the law how to get him off the streets. In 1998, Smith was finally sentenced to 40 years in prison. In 1999, he was sentenced to life plus 20 years after pleading guilty to the rape of a five-year-old and the confession to 83 other sexual assaults with children.

Polly Franks has testified before Congress and lobbied on Capital Hill for tougher sex offender laws.

In 2006, she created the Franks Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting kids from sexual predators. And she provides a rather unique service to young victims of sexual abuse who are treated at hospitals called "Operation Fuzzy." The kits provide a tremendous comfort to the children after a trauma.

"Smith did not get to my children or anyone else's because of parental neglect. Smith's crime spree was a smashing success because repeatedly he was put back onto the streets, 286 victims (that we know of) later."

By his own admission, he was a sex offender from the age of eleven.

He did not go to prison until he was forty-six years of age.

When a child is violated, we are all violated.

Morgan Harrington Murder: A Grisly Anniversary

The beautiful, shiny, loving Morgan Dana Harrington was a true original. She brought much joy and fun to family and friends for 20 years. Her light and potential were extinguished when she was abducted from a Metallica concert 10/17/09 in Charlottesville Virginia.

Morgan’s skeletonized body was found at Anchorage Farm, Albemarle County on 1/26/10. The person(s) responsible remain at large, presumably still in the Charlottesville area. Her murder remains unsolved.

It is important to her family that Morgan’s killer(s) did not erase her from the world and that she continues to create a positive legacy. To honor that the family is moving forward with several educational projects that Morgan, an education major at VT, was personally involved with and you can view them below.

Combating Human Trafficking in South Carolina- Tuesday, January 24, 2012

Activists Join South Carolina Officials to Combat Human Trafficking

Columbia, SC (January 24, 2012) – Dozens of activists descended on South Carolina’s capitol today to speak out for new state legislation against human trafficking, one of the fastest-growing criminal industries in the United States. At a press conference highlighting today’s Lobby Day, State Representative Nelson Hardwick (R-106), the lead sponsor for a newly introduced anti-human trafficking bill (H. 3757), expressed his commitment to reducing trafficking in South Carolina.

“I am committed to making sure that our communities have the tools to fight human trafficking in South Carolina,” said Representative Hardwick. “All over the country, tens of thousands of people have been brutally exploited for the profit of others. Today’s efforts show that we can all come together to support these victims, hold traffickers accountable, and ultimately, end this crime.”

In addition, Attorney General Alan Wilson, State Senator Brad Hutto (D-40), Solicitor Duffie Stone, and victim service organizations from around South Carolina also joined the activists to express support for aggressive efforts to support victims of human trafficking and prosecute traffickers.

H. 3757 is a comprehensive bill that would criminalize sex trafficking, support trafficking victims, and raise awareness of the problem. The bill gives more tools to law enforcement to combat human trafficking, including asset forfeiture. The bill also creates a civil cause of action for victims of trafficking and establishes mandatory restitution for those who have been victimized. Finally, H. 3757 creates a task force to fight human trafficking through the Office of the Attorney General.

"Human trafficking is a crime that often involves domestic violence, kidnapping, solicitation, and sexual assault," said Attorney General Wilson. "Law enforcement in this state is ready and willing to arrest and prosecute human trafficking offenders, but there currently is no law on the books for them to use. We must do better in South Carolina, and that means immediately passing a law to allow authorities to crack down on this growing crime problem."

Last August, Polaris Project ranked South Carolina as one of nine states in the country whose laws had failed to adequately address the growing crime of human trafficking. In 2011, the National Human Trafficking Resource Center hotline, which helps connect trafficking victims to services, received 163 calls related to trafficking in South Carolina, including 16 tips and 6 crisis calls.

“Over the last year and a half our agency has seen a dramatic increase in the number of human trafficking victims here in South Carolina,” said Tricia Ravenhorst, Director of the South Carolina Immigrant Victim Network. “Having a stronger state human trafficking law that supports widespread training of local law enforcement and supports collaborative efforts to combat this crime is long overdue.”

Sound The Alarms at Fox News for Missing Mother Amy Huckabee

Update: UNION COUNTY, Ark. (KSLA) - Our CBS affiliate KSLA (http://on.kthv.com/x7sY6F) reports the man wanted for murder and kidnapping in Arkadelphia is dead after a shootout with authorities. Donald Hux, 36, allegedly shot and killed Sandy Huckabee (http://on.kthv.com/w0PzB1), then kidnapped Huckabee's wife Amy and their children. Huckabee's body was found in a home in Arkadelphia. Huckabee is a first cousin of former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee.Amy Huckabee is Hux's ex-wife. KSLA reports she is dead as well but authorities are not saying how.

Donald Hux, 36 pictured above was last seen driving a tan 2005 Chevrolet extended cab truck with the license plate 487-MDZ. He is armed and extremely dangerous.

On Sunday Donald Hux stormed into the home of his ex-wife and current her husband. He killed her new husband Sandy Carl Huckabee and kidnapped Amy Huckabee along with the 3 children. The children were dropped off at his parents home, they are safe, but Amy is still missing.

Amy Huckabee's husband Sandy who was murdered yesterday is the cousin to former Governor of Arkansas Mike Huckabee. If this tragedy sheds light on intimate partner violence that leads to homicide, I say sound the alarms. The former Governor is also a popular weekend talk show host on Fox. Mike Huckabee has the opportunity to educate the public about the dangers of intimate partner homicide. He has a national platform to educate the world about how victims of intimate partner violence can stay alive. The national stage includes a public service announcement that could include the new site Document The Abuse.com.

Amy Huckabee is still missing

Amy had been threatened by her former husband for months. Those threats extended from when he was serving time in jail for assault. Why the heck someone didn't file additional charges while Donald Hux was behind bars is unknown at this time.

Stacy Peterson: Searching Till She is Found

Stacy Ann Peterson vanished on October 28, 2007, from the house in the Illinois suburb of Bolingbrook that she shared with her police-officer husband Drew Peterson, her two children and his two sons, whom she'd adopted.

Within 48 hours, camera crews and journalists besieged the once quiet suburban cul-de-sac. Peterson, then a police sergeant, gave them a show -- a bizarre public display including personal attacks on his wife and her family in the wake of her disappearance. The national media covered Peterson's act like a low-life reality TV show. Each day as Peterson left his house, journalists shoved microphones in his face, hungry for a sound bite for evening crime or news broadcasts. If you were a resident of Illinois during the first three weeks after Stacy vanished, you saw Peterson served up on local, cable and radio programs like a charred chicken flapping its wings almost around the clock.

After several months of being stalked and living under her husband's tight, controlling reins, Stacy Peterson told her husband the marriage was over. In October 2007, Stacy met and consulted with divorce attorney Harry Smith -- ironically, the same lawyerKathleen Savio hired to represent her when she decided to divorce Peterson.

When Stacy failed to show up at her brother's house that late-October day, family members were concerned, especially her sister Cassandra Cales. Just two days earlier, after a cozy family night of movie and pizza, Stacy warned Cassandra that she planned to leave Peterson and said: "If something happens to me, I just want you to know it was Drew." When Cassandra couldn't reach her missing sister, she went to Stacy's house and found the four children home alone, with no sign of Peterson's car. At theBolingbrook Police Department, Cassandra filed a missing-person report.

To me, it seemed Peterson treated Stacy's life as something inconsequential. In his attempts to discredit her during media interviews and up until he was arrested on murder charges for Kathleen Savio, Peterson made comments such as "You know she came from a broken home," or, "Her mother went missing too, so this is not a surprise." Then I heard Peterson say, "Stacy is where she wants to be." My heart sank as I thought of the boys who'd now lost a mother twice.

Seventeen days after Cassandra reported Stacy's disappearance, the Will County State Attorney's Office obtained a court order and exhumed the body of Kathleen Savio. Savio, Peterson's previous wife, was discovered dead in a bathtub in the marital house in 2004. Suddenly, the media and police focus swung from Stacy's disappearance to a new autopsy into the cause of Kathleen's death. The effort to find Stacy lost its momentum. The ground began to freeze, making the search more difficult for family and teams of volunteers. And the media remained hooked on Drew's public displays and his love life, leaving no time to find answers or enlist the public's help in finding Stacy.

In the months that followed, I met with people who knew Stacy personally. From the moment she married Drew, Stacy worked to knit a loving family environment, integrating Drew's then-estranged family into the couple's new life. From all accounts, she had a kind, warm and giving heart. People's eyes sparkled when they spoke of her. She made friends and family feel welcome. When a guest didn't show up for a gathering, Stacy called urged, "Come on," one relative recalled. "We're holding dinner, where are you? We're not starting until you get here."

Another told me: "Stacy was the glue, and that's why her disappearance is so painful to those of us who knew her."

Stacy Peterson's dream was to be a loving wife and mother, an all-around nurturer. She enrolled in nursing classes at a local college. When Stacy could no longer live under Peterson's heavy-handed control and constant watch, she made plans to leave. But like many women in her position, she made a mistake. She told her husband what she planned before she was able to move to a place where she'd be safe from him.

Stacy was silenced in the prime of her life. But there can be no silencing of family and friends who will continue to search for her until she is found.

ABC's Show "Private Practice" Sends Dangerous Message to Victims of Intimate Partner Violence

A long running television show on the ABC network "Private Practice" aired what I considered a dangerous episode for victims of intimate partner violence and homicide. A woman married to a dangerous offender sustains serious injuries after being beaten by her husband. In the hospital the victim talks about killing him. One of the main characters in the show who plays a doctor brings the patient home with her because she has safety concerns for the woman. The doctor in conversation with the victim tells her she has the power to leave basically without using violence.

The husband learns his wife is at the doctors home, storms in the front door, assaults the doctor knocking her out cold. When the doctor comes too you see the victim over the husband, covered in blood, stabbing him repeatedly.

I realize it's "only" a television show, but clearly it sends the wrong message. The scene's of the abuse were incredibly scripted and played out as if they were actually happening. The delivery was powerful.

I did not agree with the message "Private Practice" conveyed to viewers that it is okay to take matters into your own hands when you are married to a violent and dangerous psychopath.

Earlier today on the Show Time's Up, Tracey Murphy's real life was no different than the woman portraying the abuse victim on ABC's"Private Practice". Her life was a living hell sustaining injuries that included broken bones, surgery and threats to her life if she ever left. Ending the abuse was not easy, it took work, but Tracey got out, without committing murder.

Maybe if the shows writer and producers had consulted me I would have directed them to the Evidentiary Abuse Affidavit and video found on the site Document The Abuse.com or the book Time's Up.

The Facts Do Not Change Katie Nagel of Napoleon, Ohio was Murdered

Yesterday my post on Forbes Crime, She Writes about the murder of 19 year old Katie Nagel from Napoleon, Ohio (Words Can Lead to Murder) caused quite a stir in the comment section and on Facebook pages. I thought it would be better to address the comments here instead of trying to catch them all over the place.

23 years ago on the exact same day that Katie Nagel’s life was taken, my own mother was murdered by someone that no one could believe would do such a horrendous thing. I understand this case only too well. A seemingly loving partner killing the one they profess to love happens day after day and the cemeteries are full. No one wants to believe it and they lash out in anger and frustration. Believe me, I’m used to it!

Although I won’t name sources, rest assured that I would never put my words on the internet if they weren’t backed up by facts. The facts don’t change, not in this case, nor any others. Whether the justice system and the media uses those facts in the proper context is another story.

The article was not written in an accusatory fashion, only reporting on what I had learned, and seen firsthand about the case. I’m accused of being sensationalist using “hyperbole and speculation,” as well as knowing nothing because I’m from South Carolina? Just so ya know, I’m from Chicago!...check your facts, dude!

Yes, I know that we are all INNOCENT until proven GUILTY in a court of law, and nowhere in this article did I state that Mikey Peddicord was convicted of murder, only that he confessed to stabbing Katie Nagel in his own home and called 911 to report it. While Facebook contains a lot of trash talk, there are nuggets to be gleaned in solving cases, and reporting, but I’m not claiming to be a journalist, a lawyer, nor a member of law enforcement.

If those commenting negatively, and those who have emailed me privately, knew beforehand that I have been working with victims like Katie Nagel for over 20 years, have written three books, and blog regularly about such cases, they may be leaving different comments. Obviously, many still do not understand the issue of intimate partner violence or they would understand a lot of information about the conduct of abusers comes from firsthand knowledge working with those in violent relationships.

It’s interesting also that a lot of these comments are calling me out personally, as well as what I’ve written, but I haven’t seen much in the way of comments offering kind words honoring Katie or her family and friends.

So, all of that being said, my fervent prayers are with the family and friends of both Katie Nagel and Mikey Peddicord. This is a great loss to each of their families and a whole community which is feeling the ripple effect of this crime, and it will take some time before the wounds start to heal. After the chaos and grief of this tragedy settles, please reach out and do something in Katie’s name to educate other young people about the very real problem of violence in relationships. Bring it out into the open; get serious about treating violence as a crime and not just some little tiff between two people. Help advocates and specialists like me and become active in doing something to prevent this from happening to the next Katie Nagel in Napoleon, Ohio
